A rectocele is a form of prolapse in which the tissue supporting the rectum and vaginal wall of a woman weakens. The front wall of the rectum sags and bulges into the vagina, and in extreme instances, protrudes out of the vaginal opening, without the support of these pelvic floor muscles and ligaments. Rectocele and rectal prolapse are not the same thing. Rectal prolapse is defined as rectum protrusion or prolapse through the anal hole. Some women with rectocele have no symptoms. Many women, however, sense vaginal pressure, or the sensation that something is falling out of the vagina. Women frequently report: Rectal pressure, fullness, or the sense that something is trapped in the rectum are all symptoms of constipation. Having a bowel movement is difficult. Discomfort during sexual contact A soft tissue bulge that may be felt in the vagina (or protrudes from the body) Women who have a rectocele may also suffer secondary prolapse of the vaginal walls and surrounding organs, such as the bladder or uterus.
