Polyps are benign growths (tumors or neoplasms that are not malignant) that affect the lining of the gut. Although they can happen anywhere in the digestive tract, the colon is where they most frequently occur. Less than a quarter of an inch to several inches in diameter are the range of their sizes. They appear to be lumps that are emerging from the lining of the bowel. They occasionally have a "stalk" and can resemble mushrooms. Flat polyps are possible. People can have a number of polyps dispersed throughout their colon. Despite the fact that the vast majority of polyps do not, some of them can harbor cancer. Smaller polyps are less likely to develop into cancer than larger ones. Being older than 50 is the highest risk factor for acquiring polyps. Colon polyps and colon cancer are more likely to occur in families. Additionally, compared to someone who has never had a polyp, those with a personal history of polyps or colon cancer are more likely to have additional polyps in the future. Additionally, several uncommon "syndromes" that run in families raise the risk of developing polyps and malignancies, even in people who are younger.
