Amenorrhea, which is sometimes described as missing one or more menstrual periods, is the absence of menstruation. When a person is considered primary amenorrheic, they have not had their period by the age of 15. Although anatomical issues can also induce amenorrhea, hormone levels are the most frequent cause of primary amenorrhea. The absence of three or more consecutive periods by a person who has experienced periods in the past is referred to as secondary amenorrhea. Secondary amenorrhea is most frequently brought on by pregnancy, though it can also be brought on by hormonal issues. The underlying cause of amenorrhea affects how it is treated. Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) might cause irregular periods in certain users. It could take some time even after discontinuing birth control tablets for regular ovulation and menstruation to return. Amenorrhea can also be brought on by some types of intrauterine devices, as well as by injectable or implantable contraceptives.
